TLS Rehouses the Iconic Olympus OM Lenses - A Titan Returns. A Legend Reborn!
October 15, 2025 — TLS proudly announces the rebirth of a legend with the launch of the rehoused Olympus OM lens range, bringing Yoshihisa Maitani’s timeless optical vision into the modern filmmaking era.
Originally designed in the early 1970s by the celebrated Olympus engineer Yoshihisa Maitani, the Olympus OM series revolutionised camera design with a simple yet powerful philosophy — that cameras and lenses should be lighter, smaller, and more intuitive without compromising on optical performance.
The OM lenses quickly earned acclaim for their compact form, exceptional sharpness, natural rendering, and rich colour reproduction. Their organic, cinematic look and smooth contrast have since made them a favourite among filmmakers seeking authenticity and depth in their imagery. However, while their optics have stood the test of time, the original stills housings were never built for the demands of modern digital cinema.
Floating Elements – Preserving Image Quality
Many lenses rely on floating elements to maintain sharpness across all focus distances. Unlike fixed designs, TLS preserves the floating element system in every rehoused Olympus OM lens to ensure consistent resolution, clarity, and contrast.
An exception is made for the 50mm Macro (non-f/1.2), where the floating group has been locked to extend image circle coverage — with minimal loss in image quality and negligible impact on focus breathing.
Variable Cams – Precision Where It Matters
Every TLS-rehoused Olympus OM lens features variable cam focus mechanics, offering smooth, natural control. This design provides slower movement at infinity and increased sensitivity at close focus, giving focus pullers enhanced precision and consistency across the entire set.
The Result
The TLS rehoused Olympus OM range delivers the perfect blend of vintage character and modern performance. Cinematographers can now enjoy the sharpness and clarity of contemporary optics alongside the organic contrast and tonal warmth that defined Maitani’s originals — with consistent T-stops and unified mechanics throughout the set.
A Titan Returns. A Legend Reborn.
