Leicester, UK —03, September 2026 — TLS has launched its new rehoused Nikon AI/AI-S cinema lens series, bringing the distinctive optical character of Nikon's legendary vintage lenses into a purpose-built cinema housing designed for today's productions.

Building on Nikon's long-established lens heritage, which began with the introduction of the iconic F-mount in 1959, the Nikon AI and AI-S lenses have become highly regarded among filmmakers for their balanced image quality, natural rendering and timeless character.

Originally introduced in 1977, Nikon's Automatic Indexing (AI) system represented a significant evolution in lens design, followed by the AI-S generation in 1981 with further refinements to aperture control. Re-engineered for Beautiful Bokeh

As part of the TLS rehousing process, the original polygonal iris is replaced with a custom-made circular iris, creating a smoother and a subtly enhanced character. The replacement iris blades also feature a flat black anti-reflective coating to minimise unwanted reflections.

The resulting rendering provides smooth background separation, soft focus transitions and pleasing highlight definition, making the lenses particularly effective portraits, dialogue scenes or intimate close-ups, the bokeh enhances storytelling without overpowering the image.

Natural Depth & Focus Fall-Off

The Nikon AI/AI-S lenses create a gentle transition from sharp focus into softer backgrounds.
